Preparing Strategically for Job Interviews

While most experienced job candidates recognize the value of accurate and current information, many do not conduct adequate research, or they “cram” for the interview at the last minute.

In order to excel in the interview process, it is often necessary to take a step back and review how you are preparing for job interviews and if you are taking the necessary steps to help you package and promote yourself strategically. While it is not possible to prepare for every circumstance, it is possible to think through your goals and strategies and develop approaches to overcoming potential obstacles. Doing your due diligence and conducting thorough research is essential throughout the career transition process, and is particularly important if you want to have robust, needs-based interviews that lead to job offers.

Prepare early in your search campaign to develop a strong foundation and a solid game plan. As you prepare for specific interviews, you can fine-tune your strategies and tailor your interviewing approaches for each individual situation.

Four Key Preparation Strategies

Make it a habit to take the following steps to strategically prepare for your interviews:

Conduct Industry Research
o        Learn as much as possible about trends and outlook, areas of growth, products and services in greatest demand, leading companies, skills and knowledge in demand, and new technologies. Use this information to prepare thoughtful questions to ask your interviewer.

Research the Company
o        Prepare yourself to have an intelligent discussion about the company by knowing the company’s size, performance and structure, history and philosophy, organizational culture, core business and products, company and business reputation, key differentiators in products and services, recent or impending changes, senior executives, company competitors, new products, markets, business strategies, organizational announcements, and recent press.

Position Research
o        Prepare questions to understand the position responsibilities and requirements, position history, major challenges and goals, resources and support, key stakeholders and partners.

Interviewer Research
o        Use your networking sources or the internet to gather basic information regarding your interviewer and key executives.

What is your return on investment for strategic interview preparation?
o        Increased confidence
o        Improved ability to target your marketing message
o        Compelling conversations
o        Enhanced and lasting first impression
